Early Life and Education
Justice Madan T. Joshi was born on April 26, 1954, in Amravati. He completed his early schooling at New Era High School in Khamgaon, District Buldana. He pursued higher education at G.S. College, Khamgaon, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English Literature and Philosophy. Justice Joshi then obtained his LL.B. degree from Nagpur University, setting the foundation for a distinguished legal career.
Legal Practice and Journalism
Justice Joshi began his professional journey as an advocate in Akola on March 6, 1980, specializing mainly in civil law. He practiced law here until December 21, 1992. Concurrently, he also practiced in the High Court of Bombay, at the Bench in Nagpur. Alongside his legal career, Justice Joshi was a working journalist with three different dailies in Akola over a decade starting from 1976, showcasing his multifaceted talents and commitment to public discourse.
Judicial Appointments and Contributions
On December 22, 1992, Justice Joshi was appointed as a Direct District Judge on probation as an Additional District Judge at Jalna. Over the next 14 years, he held several significant judicial positions, including:
- Director, Judicial Officers’ Training Institute, Maharashtra, Nagpur
- Principal Judge at the Family Courts in Pune and Mumbai
- Principal District and Sessions Judge in Pune
- Registrar at the High Court Bench in Nagpur
- President of the Industrial Courts, Maharashtra
- Principal Judge at the City Civil and Sessions Court, Mumbai
High Court Tenure
Justice Joshi’s exemplary service led to his elevation to the Bench of the Bombay High Court on March 17, 2011, where he served with honor and distinction until his retirement on April 26, 2016.
Post-Retirement Service
After retiring from active judicial duties, Justice Joshi continued to serve the legal community and the public in important oversight roles. He was appointed Vice Chairman of the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal, Mumbai, and later served as a Judicial Member of the Securities Appellate Tribunal, Mumbai, beginning March 18, 2019.
